Exploring Vík í Mýrdal: The Ultimate Guide to Iceland’s Cutest Village
If you’ve been stalking my Instagram stories, you know I have been completely swooning over Iceland. But there is one spot that stole my heart (and filled up my camera roll) faster than anywhere else: Vík í Mýrdal.

Nestled right on the South Coast, Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland and, honestly, it gives major main character energy. We are talking dramatic black sand beaches, adorable red-roofed churches, and basalt columns that look like they were designed by an architect on another planet.
Whether you’re just passing through on a Ring Road road trip or settling in for a few days of puffin-watching, here is everything you need to know about Vík!
The Vibe
Vík is tiny (like, less than 300 people tiny), but it packs a punch. It sits right under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which covers the Katla volcano. It’s moody, it’s atmospheric, and it’s the perfect base for exploring the South Coast.
Best Time to Go: * Summer (June - August): Endless daylight (midnight sun!) and PUFFINS! 🐧
- Winter (October - March): Cozy vibes and a prime spot for hunting the Northern Lights since there’s very little light pollution.

What to Do
1. Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
You’ve seen it on Pinterest, and yes, it is even more stunning in real life. The contrast of the white waves crashing against the jet-black sand is unreal.
- Photo Op: The basalt columns (Gardar) are a must for that "sitting on a natural throne" shot.
- IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: I cannot stress this enough—respect the sneaker waves. The ocean here is unpredictable and dangerous. Never turn your back on the water, and don't get too close to the shoreline for a selfie. It’s not worth it!
2. Visit the Famous Red-Roofed Church
The Vík í Mýrdal Church (Víkurkirkja) is the icon of the town. Perched high on a hill, it overlooks the ocean and the sea stacks. Drive up (or hike if you want a booty workout) for the best panoramic view of the village. It is the shot to get.
3. The Icelandic Lava Show
Okay, this sounded a bit touristy to me at first, but it ended up being one of the coolest things I did! It’s the only place in the world where you can safely experience real flowing lava indoors. You can literally feel the heat radiating off it. Plus, the hosts are super witty and fun. It’s a total blast.
4. Puffin Watching at Dyrhólaey
Just a quick drive from town is the Dyrhólaey arch. If you are visiting between May and mid-August, this is Puffin Central! They nest in the cliffs here, and you can see them waddling around. They are smaller than you think and infinitely cuter.
Where to Eat
Vík has surprisingly amazing food for such a small place!
- Skool Beans: ☕ A micro-roaster inside a converted yellow school bus? Yes, please. They have a resident cat, incredible bagels, and the coffee is top-tier. It is the most aesthetic start to your morning.
- Smiðjan Brugghús: The place to be for a post-adventure burger and beer. It’s a brewpub with a super cool industrial vibe. Try the "Jeep" burger!
- The Soup Company: Located inside the Icelandic Lava Show building. You have to try their Red Hot Lava Soup. It’s served in a black bread bowl and is spicy and delicious. Perfect for warming up after a windy beach walk.
- Black Crust Pizzeria: Sourdough pizza with a crust dyed black with activated charcoal. It sounds gimmicky, but it’s actually delicious and looks great in photos.
Where to Stay
- The Barn: Don’t let the word "hostel" scare you—this place is chic. It’s modern, clean, and has a bar that feels like a cool hotel lounge. Great for meeting other travelers!
- Black Beach Suites: If you want your own space, these studios are stunning. They have floor-to-ceiling windows with ocean views. I stayed here and saw the Northern Lights right from my terrace! ✨
- Hotel Vík í Mýrdal: A solid, stylish choice right in the center of town. Ask for a room facing the sea stacks!
Helpful Tips
- Pack Layers: The wind in Vík is no joke. I’m talking "blow your car door off" wind. Bring a windbreaker and a beanie, even in summer.
- Gas Up: There’s a gas station and a decent grocery store (Krónan) in town. Stock up on snacks here before heading further east towards the glaciers.
- Wool Shopping: The massive Icewear store is right in the center of town. If you’ve been wanting an authentic Icelandic wool sweater (lopapeysa), this is a great place to grab one.
Vík was honestly the highlight of my South Coast road trip. It’s moody, magical, and totally unforgettable. Have you been to Iceland? Let me know in the comments if you’d brave the Black Sand Beach! 👇
