Most ziplines have you sitting upright in a harness like a sack of potatoes. This one does not. On the Superman Ride you lie flat, head first, arms out if you dare, and fly a full kilometre over the Icelandic landscape at up to 120 km/h. No engine, just gravity and a cable.

Mega Zipline Iceland runs the ride in Hveragerði, the geothermal town in South Iceland. Capes, sadly, are not allowed. The crew were quite clear about that.

What you'll do on the Superman zipline

You get kitted up in a specialised harness and helmet, then launch head first for the ride of the day: one kilometre of line at speeds up to 120 km/h. The whole experience is listed at 55 minutes, which includes more than the ride itself, so do not expect to spend it all in the air.

Bring warm clothes and sturdy shoes, plus, according to the operator, a smile. At 120 km/h the wind finds every gap in your jacket, even on a mild day, so the warm clothes are not a formality.

Pro tip: wear a layer you can zip right up to the chin and gloves if you own them. Flying head first means your face and hands take the full wind.
