One kilometre, one harness, and the only effort required from you is letting go. Mega Zipline Iceland's Conventional Ride in Hveragerði sends you over the landscape in a seated harness. The operator bills it as the longest zipline in Iceland.

What the Hveragerði zipline ride is like

The ride starts at the Black Canyon, a gorge of waterfalls and columnar basalt, and finishes by the Reykjadalsá river next to Reykjadalur Cafe. You sit in a specially designed harness, so you get a view of what's below you instead of just hanging on. The whole experience takes about 55 minutes.

It's one of the easier ways to get a family airborne in South Iceland, as long as everyone meets the age and weight limits below. Mega Zipline pitch it as a ride for the whole family: a full kilometre that goes from canyon waterfalls to a river valley, with you sitting down the whole way.

Who can ride

The minimum age is 9, and children aged 9 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult (18+). Riders must weigh between 30 kg (66 lbs) and 120 kg (265 lbs). These limits come from the operator, so check them before you promise the kids.

Bring warm clothes and good, sturdy shoes. The operator also asks for a smile, which is optional but encouraged.

Pro tip: dress for the wind. It's always cooler moving through the air than standing on the ground, so an extra layer and gloves make the ride more fun.
