The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is often called Iceland in miniature: a glacier-capped volcano, craters, sea arches, black beaches and one of the most photographed mountains in the country, all on one peninsula and far from the crowds of the south.

On the southern shore, Ytri Tunga is one of the few places in Iceland where you can often see harbour seals resting on the rocks. At Búðir, a small black church stands alone on an open lava plain with the glacier behind it. Then comes Snæfellsjökull National Park: the volcano that inspired Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth, the narrow Rauðfeldsgjá gorge you can step into, and the Gatklettur sea arch at Arnarstapi.

At Djúpalónssandur, black pebbles, the rusting remains of a shipwreck and the old fishermen's lifting stones fill a sheltered cove. After the Hólahólar crater row, a staircase takes you up Saxhóll Crater for views across the lava fields, and the day ends at Kirkjufell, the arrowhead mountain above the fjord with its waterfall in front.
