The Amazing Northern Lights Even local Icelanders stand in awe and gaze at the Northern Lights when they appear in the winter sky in Iceland. This natural phenomenon is one of the most spectacular things to see. On the dark winter nights the lights are often seen dancing across the Icelandic sky. Sometimes the lights are visible in Reykjavik, but most often it is best to drive out away from the city to areas where there is little light pollution. Our professional guides know how to read the weather and can find the best hidden areas to see the lights. The tour is of course completely dependent on weather both on earth and on the sun, and sightings are not guaranteed.

Vík the small town on the south coast

This tour takes a route from Reykjavík towards the south coast of Iceland. As we travel the southern coast the scenery will change at almost every turn. You’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches, and fantastic mountain scenery. As we wind our way along the coast you’ll catch a glimpse of Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano, Eyjafjallajokull volcano (the one that canceled all the flights), the Westman Islands, and beauty you won’t believe. Just after we have visited the coastal town of Vík, we need to turn off the main road and go where there are no roads. This is why we are traveling in a modified super jeep, which is capable of driving through almost anything. This journey from the main road to the glacier is not only thrilling but also incredibly beautiful. In wintertime, the journey can be quite demanding on the super jeep.Eventually, we’ll arrive at the base of the Katla glacier, where it’s time to gear up with crampons and helmets which we provide. Then we make our way to the base of the glacier where we’ll find the Ice caves. We spend as much time as is possible on the glacier giving you the chance to really take in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Our guides know these areas very well and have been working in the area for many years. All of our guides have experience and are trained in glacial exploration and are first aid certified.Itinerary: One of Icelands classic waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss Certainly not one of Icelands biggest waterfalls but what makes Seljalandsfoss different is that most of the year you can actually walk behind the cascading water. Seals can often be seen swimming around in the lagoon or relaxing on top of a floating iceberg. The Black Dimond Beach Jökulsárlón is full of icebergs that melt slowly and travel down the river to the ocean. The strong current of the Atlantic Ocean throws the icebergs back to land where they are stranded on the black beach. This beach has earned the nickname Black Dimond Beach. It is a great experience to walk on the beach between the icebergs and enjoy. The sculpture of the ice is varied and you can find endless photo opportunities.Waterfall Seljalandsfoss Seljalandsfoss is one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland. Hjálparfoss - Help's fall

The Essential Landmannalaugar Embark on a journey to one of Iceland’s most captivating destinations Landmannalaugar, located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve in the Highlands of Iceland, famous for its breathtaking landscapes such as vibrant colored rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, lava fields and epic hikes. The lava fields and the rhyolite mountains are the result of thousands of years of volcanic activity. Laugahraun lava field was formed in a volcanic eruption in 1477 consisting of vast erratic black obsidian which is known for its smooth, sharp edges and unique appearance, and famed in the TV series Game of Thrones as “Dragon Glass”. Rhyolite is a type of volcanic rock that is made of quartz and silica and with minerals such as iron and sulphur adding extra color to the mountains. Brennisteinsalda or “the Sulphur Wave” is a very good example of this.We will stay over 3 hours in Landmannalaugur and we offer approx. 2 hour guided hike through the obsidian fields up to Brennisteinsalda, but you are welcome to explore the area on your own within the given time frame. You can take on different trail or just relax and stay longer in the natural hot pool – just don’t forget to bring your swim suit and a towel on the trip! The natural beauty and unique geology of this area will leave you in awe and create memories that will last a lifetime.Itinerary Hjálparfoss - Help's fall Hjálparfoss is a beautiful, two stepped waterfall that cascades down into a large plunge pool that is surrounded by very unique basalt rock formations. The surrounding area is called Hjálp or “help” because when people had to travel from the north to the south over the highlands of Iceland they had to travel through the harsh and desolated Sprengisandur route. It was usually very hard to find a place in this desert route to feed the horses and when arriving to the the lush area near Hjálparfoss people thought of it as a help, because finally there was grass for the horses to bite after this long journey.Landmannalaugar - Hike and natural pool Here we do a little hike and bathe in a natural hot spring. Landmannalaugar and the Valley of Tears

Landmannalaugar Hike and the Valley of Tears from Rvk and Selfoss

Join us for a tour of the Reykjanes Peninsula, an area marked by powerful geological activity. You’ll see Iceland’s youngest lava fields and visit the town of Grindavík, where devastating earthquakes split roads, lava flows damaged houses, and residents were forced to evacuate.During the tour, you’ll explore a geothermal area with numerous hot springs, admire the scenic lake Kleifarvatn, see Iceland’s oldest lighthouse, cross the bridge between continents, and ancient lava fields covered in soft, vibrant moss, all over.!!! The Reykjanes Peninsula, especially around Grindavík, is currently in an active state. Although lava isn’t flowing at the moment, it’s likely to resume. Should volcanic activity cause area closures, we may need to adjust our itinerary but will stop at the next possible viewpoint to see the eruption, if accessible. Itinerary The Lake Kleifarvatn Kleifarvatn is the largest lake on the Reykjanes peninsula and a sight to behold. The road along the lake is probably one of the most under rated tourist roads int the country which hugs the lake’s shore. The tall mountains on the other side, make the drive alongside the lake nearly as fun as stopping to admire it from various vantage points. Fun Fact: In the year 2000, Kleifarvatn lost 20% of its water, when a fissure opened after an earthquake. The water drained into the nearby North Atlantic ocean through a subterranean channel. It has since recovered almost entirely. The Geothermal area Seltún On the fissure zone between 2 tectonic plates running across Iceland lies the large geothermal area of Krýsuvík. Within this area is Seltún, a geothermal field, where volcanic fumeroles, mud pots and hot springs have formed. The result of the geothermal activity is a landscape seemingly painted bright yellow, red and green; a result of sulfur interacting with the other minerals in the soil. The Lava Field in Nátthagi Here you will see the most recent lava fields created by the volcano at Fagradalsfjall. This is the youngest land in Iceland and can sometimes be alive with molten rock and lava.Grindavík the Fishing Village Grindavík, a small fishing town on the Reykjanes Peninsula, has faced significant natural disasters in recent months due to ongoing volcanic activity. Since late 2023, a series of powerful earthquakes and eruptions have forced evacuations, damaged infrastructure, and reshaped the landscape. The town remains largely abandoned, with roads split, homes destroyed, and the ground continuing to shift. Despite the devastation, scientists closely monitor the region, and emergency responders work tirelessly to manage the situation. This unfolding event highlights Iceland’s ever-changing nature and the raw power of the forces beneath our feet. The largest mud pool in Iceland, Gunnuhver Not far from Grindavik, Gunnuhver is an area of mud pools and steam vents on the very tip of the Reykjanes peninsula. The gases spewing from the ground make the surrounding lava rock into bubbling clay and the water to acid. Gunnuhver is the largest mud pot in Iceland. The area was named after a local ghost, Gunna, who was said to be causing trouble in the area until the local priest trapped her and she fell into the hot spring some 400 years ago. Scary!ReykjanesvitiThe Lighthouse On Reykjanes there are many lighthouses. Some even say that the lighthouses outnumber the villages. The most famous of them all, as well as being the oldest one in Iceland, is Reykjanes lighthouse, which stands 29 meters (95ft) tall 69 meters (226 ft) above sea level. The Bridge between continents Bridge between Europe and North America on Reykjanes Peninsula. The lava-scarred Reykjanes peninsula lies on one of the world’s major plate boundaries, the Mid Atlantic Ridge. According to the continental drift theory the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are continuously drifting apart with great forces under the gaping rifts. As the plates diverge, linear fractures, known as fissures form due to stresses created by the tension that builds up as the plates move away from each other. The Bridge between two continents at Sandvík is a small footbridge over a major fissure which provides clear evidence of the presence of a diverging plate margin. The bridge was built as a symbol for the connection between Europe and North America.

While you dine, learn about sustainable greenhouse horticulture and, optionally, explore the little tomato shop or see the Icelandic horses bred on the farm. Finally, you’ll slow down and reconnect with nature at Laugarás Lagoon, a warm and inviting geothermal lagoon surrounded by peaceful countryside. The Valley of Thor, or Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) in Icelandic, is a nature reserve in the southern highlands, located between three glaciers; Eyjafjallajökull (the famous glacier volcano that erupted in 2010 and caused widespread disruption to air traffic in Europe), Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. Þórsmörk is a place of diverse and magnificent landscape with its ice capped peaks, jagged mountain ridges and valleys rich with moss and birch woodland. Þórsmörk is a paradise for hikers, photographers and nature lovers. The route to Þórsmörk has many unbridged rivercrossings with deep fast flowing waters, famous for trapping tourists in un-modified rental cars. Therefore we take you to Þórsmörk in one of our super jeeps, a modified vehicle with huge tyres that can forge rivers and tackle just about any terrain. Riding in a Super jeep is an adventure on its own.Itinerary Waterfall Seljalandsfoss Seljalandsfoss is one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland. This 66m (213ft) high waterfall is not the most powerful waterfall in Iceland but extremely beautiful. What makes it special, though, is the fact that you can walk behind it. Just remember to bring rain gear with you because it is not unlikely that spray from the waterfall will catch you.Gígjökull Glacier By now you have entered the beautiful Surroundings of Þórsmörk. Gígjökull is an outlet that flows from Eyjafjallajökull. Previously, there was a glacial lagoon underneath the glacier, which was one of the gems of Þórsmörk, but it got destroyed in the famous 2010 Eyjafjalla volcanic eruption. therefore today it is possible to drive on the former bottom of the lagoon almost up to the glacier.Valahnúkur Here we hike! Hiking up Valahnúkur is relatively easy 220m (722ft) ascent hike and takes about an hour and a half. When you are up there you are standing in an elevation of around 1000m (3300ft) with a spectacular view over valleys and gorges covered with moss and birch forest, glacial rivers and the glaciers Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull.Básar - The hikers wonderland Básar is one of the most beautiful and sheltered areas in the Þórsmörk – an oasis of natural birch woods. It is a wonderland for hikers with hiking trails and paths in all directions, through valleys and gorges with delicate birch forest, glacial rivers and magnificent mountain scenery.

The Snæfellsness peninsula offers great beauty and mystery and is often described as “Iceland in Miniature” due to the diverse natural attractions that the area has to offer, such as beautiful mountain views, black sand beaches, rock belts down to the shore, lava fields, beautiful villages and of course the mysterious Snæfellsjökull glacier.Itinerary Selvallafoss the Sheep's Waterfall Selvallafoss is a small but beautiful waterfall that is often called “The Hidden Waterfall” or “The Sheep’s Waterfall”. For two obvious reasons. One reasons is because the waterfall is not visible from the road but it falls over a multi-step rock in the streams of Fossá on its way to merge with Selvallavatn. Another reason is that often there is a flock of sheep resting underneath the cliffs by the waterfall sheltered from the wind. P.s. with good will you can walk under the waterfall. The beautiful village Stykkishólmur Stykkishólmur is located on the north side of Snæfellsnes and surrounded by a wonderful view of the countless islands of Breiðafjörður bay. The town origins can be traced to a natural harbor and an important trading post was formed there early in the history of Iceland. Today many old houses have been renovated and are a great splendor of the town and makes a wonderful atmosphere. Stykkishólmur is today a service and trade center for the area and most of the people make their living from fishing and tourism. In Stykkishólmur we are given time to have lunch.Kirkjufell the arrowhead mountain Kirkjufell, standing tall above the Grundafjörður village, is without a doubt the most photographed mountain in Iceland. And no wonder why. The narrow top mountain with its steep and rocky hills, shaped by volcano eruptions and glaciers over millions of years,is unique and makes a perfect photo opportunity. Many recognise the mountain as The Arrow Head Mountain from Games of Thrones.Saxhóll crater Saxhóll is a 45 meter high beautifully shaped volcanic crater. It rises up from the moss-covered lavafields in Snæfellsjökull National Park. At the top you have a view over the tip of the Peninsula with the Atlantic ocean to souoth, west and north and the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier to the east.Djúpalónssandur a Black sand beach Djúpalónssandur is an old fishing boat landing. It is an amazing black sandy beach and bay on foot of Snæfellsjökull .There are beautiful volcanic formations on the way down to the beach and further down, just before the sandy beach, there are 4 big rocks where “would be fishermen” would test their strength in the hope of getting employment on a fishing boat. They are; Fullsterkur, Full strength 154 kg, Hálfsterkur, Half strength 100 kg, Hálfdrættingur, Weak 54 kg and Amlóði, Bungler 23 kg. Half Strength marked the frontier of wimpy and those who couldn’t lift it was deemed unsuitable for life at sea. These days of course the prerequisites of employmentas a fisherman are a little different, but you are very welcome to try your hand at the rocks! At the beach, you will also see rusted metal from the English trawler Eding, which was wrecked at the Djúpalón beach in 1948.Arnarstapi an old trading post Arnarstapi was an important trading post in the past and today there still is a good anchorage for small boats. Columnar basalt, ravines and grottoes surround the Arnarstapi pier and we offer a walk along the coastline to experience the magnificent lava formations and to watch the birds. There is quite a large arctic tern colony in the village itself.Ytri-Tunga - where wild seals are often seen Before we return to Reykjavík we stop at Ytri-Tunga beach, which is one of the best places in Iceland to see wild seals. There are a number of different species of seal in Iceland, and two of them can be seen at Ytri Tunga, The Common Seal and The Grey Seal.
