Dynjandi

Dynjandi (pronounced din-yan-di) is the Westfjords' most dramatic waterfall — a 100-metre cascade that fans out in seven distinct tiers before crashing into the fjord below. The name means 'thunderous one' in Icelandic, and standing at its base, you'll understand why. This isn't a waterfall you glance at from a car window; it demands your full attention.

The trail from the car park takes about 20–30 minutes to reach the top tier, passing five smaller named waterfalls along the way. Go in June or July for the fullest flow and the chance to hike in near-constant daylight. The Westfjords see far fewer visitors than the south coast, so you may have the whole place almost to yourself — a genuinely rare thing in Iceland these days.

Dynjandi sits along Route 60, roughly 200 km from Ísafjörður, the region's main town. It's best combined with a longer Westfjords road trip — pair it with the red-sand beach at Rauðasandur or the Arctic fox centre in Melrakkasetur.
