Reykjanes Peninsula

Keflavík

Home to Iceland's international airport, about 50 km southwest of Reykjavík (45 minutes' drive). Most people pass straight through, but staying your first or last night here saves you the Reykjavík transfer and puts you close to the Blue Lagoon and the Reykjanes Peninsula sights.

The Reykjanes Peninsula around Keflavík has been the site of repeated volcanic eruptions since 2021 near Fagradalsfjall and Sundhnúkur. Check safetravel.is for current conditions — eruption sites may be accessible for viewing depending on activity. Other peninsula highlights include Gunnuhver hot spring (a violently boiling mud pot), the Bridge Between Continents (a footbridge over the tectonic plate rift), and Seltún geothermal area.

Keflavík and neighbouring Njarðvík have merged into the town of Reykjanesbær (about 19,000 people). There are good restaurants — Kaffi Duus at the harbour and Paddy's for casual dining. The Viking World museum near the airport has a full-size replica Viking ship. Duus Hús cultural centre is also worth a look if you have time to kill before a flight.
