North Iceland
Akureyri (say it: ah-kur-AY-ree) punches well above its weight for a town of 20,000 people. Sitting at the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, it's the undisputed capital of North Iceland — with a proper high street, year-round flights from Reykjavík (45 minutes), and a buzzy food scene that surprises most visitors who expected something sleepy.
The town is a great base for some of the north's best experiences. Whale watching tours from the nearby port of Dalvík give you excellent odds of humpback and minke sightings in summer. In winter, the ski slopes of Hlíðarfjall are just 5 kilometres away, and the surrounding region is one of the most reliable spots in Iceland for catching the northern lights away from city glow. Godafoss waterfall — one of Iceland's most photogenic — is only a 30-minute drive east along the Ring Road.
Don't leave without walking up to the Akureyrarkirkja church, which towers over the town from a hilltop staircase lined with lights in winter. The Botanical Garden below it is free to enter and, remarkably, grows over 7,000 plant species this far north. Late June through August is the sweet spot for visiting — long days, warm enough for a light jacket, and everything is open.
